On 2-5 October 2011 the 5th Trends in Medical Mycology (TIMM) took place in Valencia, Spain. TIMM is the bi-annual joined meeting organized jointly by the European Confederation of Medical Mycology (ECMM) and the Infectious Diseases Group of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC IDG).

TIMM is one of the most important meetings in the field of fungal infections, a forum in which medical mycologists, microbiologists and clinicians from all over the world exchange research results and opinions on medical practice.
Previous TIMM congresses were held in Amsterdam, Berlin, Turin and Athens. Valencia was the 2011 venue city.

The structure of the scientific programme with plenary sessions, parallel workshops, Meet-the-Expert sessions and poster sessions was well received. And also the sponsored symposia were very well appreciated and attended.

The poster session encouraged one-to-one discussions between faculty, presenters and delegates and was well visited. This year 315 abstracts were accepted for poster presentation, this is an increase of more than 25% in comparison with TIMM2009.

Lots of younger colleagues (under 35 years) were present during the congress and 4 of them, having excellent posters to present, received the “ECMM Young Investigators Travel Award”.

There were 2 special lectures: the ECMM E. Drouhet Lecture and the EORTC Ben De Pauw Lecture.
Josep Guarro from Spain presented the first with the title: “Taxonomy: What is in a name?”

The Ben De Pauw Lecture was presented by John Edwards from the USA, with the title: “Is vaccination against opportunistic fungi a realistic option?”
During the Congress many different organisations and societies took the opportunity to hold committee meetings, seminars and working group discussions, including the ECMM Council, the EORTC ID Group and Investigators Meeting and the ECMM Zygomycosis Working Group.
