Dr. Peter-Michael Rath is specialist for Medical Microbiology, Virology and Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases (1994), senior physician at the Institute for Medical Microbiology of the University Hospital Essen, Germany, Extraordinary Professor for Medical Microbiology at the Medical Faculty of the University Duisburg-Essen (2005), and since 10 years head of the Antibiotic/Antimycotic Consultant Service at the University Hospital Essen.

He received his medical degree (1989) from the Free University of Berlin. 1993 he moved to the University Hospital of Essen where he habilitated in Medical Microbiology and Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases (1999). From 2008 to 2011 he was secretary of the German Speaking Mycological Society (DmykG) and in 2016 congress president of the 50. Annual Meeting of the DmykG.

His scientific interest focused on epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of opportunistic fungal infections, especially on infections due to Aspergillus, Scedosporium, Candida and Pneumocystis.
