Wendy WJ van de Sande, PhD (1980) is an associate professor at the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the ErasmusMC, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Dr. van de Sande is convener of the eumycetoma working group under the umbrella of the International Society of Human and Animal Mycosis and member of the steering committee of the Global Mycetoma Working Group. She is an expert on human mycetoma and her research involves the development of novel diagnostic assays and the testing of novel anti-mycetoma compounds. In her laboratory she developed in vitro susceptibility assasy for non-sporulation fungi, which is used in drug discovery projects. For in vivo assessment she uses an in vivo Galleria mellonella model. One of the most innovative approaches to identify novel drugs for mycetoma is the MycetOS project, an open source drug discovery project for mycetoma, in which all members of the scientific community are able to participate. Dr. van de Sande authored more than 70 scientific papers and several book chapters and is member of the International Society for Human and Animal Mycosis (ISHAM), Netherlands Society for Medical Mycology (NVMY) and the American society for microbiology (ASM).
