Dr. Jaime David Acosta-España earned his MD title in 2014 at the Central University of Ecuador, and then embarked on a postgraduate training in medical microbiology at the Federal University of Ceará in Brazil in 2017, with the support of an Organisation of American States scholarship. His thirst for knowledge led him to pursue master’s degrees in infectious diseases in 2020 and human immunodeficiency viruses in 2021, both in Spain.

He obtained a teaching certification in medical education from Harvard University in 2022. From 2018 to 2020, he made substantial contributions to the Ecuadorian Ministry of Health, where he specialised in infection control and medical microbiology in tertiary and secondary hospitals, with a focus on medical mycology. He then assumed the role of head of microbiology at Vozandes Quito Hospital from 2020 to 2022, and played a key role in Ecuador’s Emergency Response Committee for COVID-19.

From 2019 to 2022, Dr. Acosta taught medical microbiology, immunology, and tropical medicine at the University of the Americas in Ecuador. He received a research award from the National Institute for Research and Public Health (INSPI). In 2023, he joined the University of Jena, Germany, as a research associate (Dr. Voigt ´s group), collaborating with the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology e.V. Hans Knöll Institute. He is also a professor in the postgraduate programme in infectious diseases at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador and teaches medical microbiology and infectious diseases at Universidad Internacional SEK, Ecuador.

Currently, Dr. Acosta is pursuing a PhD in microbiology and infection biology at the University of Jena, Germany.
