Dr Terenzio Cosio, MD, PhD, is a resident in medical microbiology at the Fondazione Agostino Gemelli IRCCS in Rome. Since 2018, he has engaged in a productive collaboration with the dermatology department, investigating the potential of retinoids as antifungal agents, elucidating their mechanisms of action and securing two patents. Between 2021 and 2024, during his doctoral studies, Dr Cosio focused on the mycobiome in patients with inflammatory skin conditions, assessing the impact of biological drugs as inhibitors of interleukin 17 and phosphodiesterase 4 on the mycobiome and the associated risk of fungal infections. He spent 6 months in Paris to study the mixed biofilm of Aspergillus fumigatus and Stenotrophomas maltophilia and the effect of retinoids on it. Additionally, his research has extended to the study of host-pathogen interactions, with particular emphasis on dermatophytes and the evaluation of novel therapeutic molecules for treating onychomycosis. Currently, Dr. Cosio is researching the virulence factors of Candida auris and its metabolomic signatures and engaging in translational research within medical mycology.
