Auke de Jong obtained his PhD at the Medical Mycology department of the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute, performing research on the emerging multidrug resistant fungal pathogen Candida auris and its relatives of the Candida haemulonii complex. In June 2023, he temporarily moved away from fungal research and started as a molecular biologist at the National Wastewater Surveillance department of the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). In 2024 he became the coordinator of the medical mycology group at the RIVM, where he is involved in multiple research programs regarding the surveillance of different (resistant) fungal pathogens including dermatophytes, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Candida auris. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands society for Microbiology (KNVM), The Dutch society for Medical Mycology (NVMy) and the ESCMID Fungal Infections Study Group (EFISG)
