Dr. Montelongo earned a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Texas at San Antonio, where his research in Dr. Lopez-Ribot’s laboratory focused on the intricate interactions within mixed biofilms of Candida albicans and streptococci. Following this, Dr. Montelongo pursued postdoctoral training at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry under Dr. Jabra-Rizk, advancing the understanding of the emerging multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen Candida auris.
Driven by a passion for clinical microbiology, Dr. Montelongo completed a Clinical Microbiology Fellowship (CPEP) at the University of Utah and ARUP Laboratories in Salt Lake City. Recently, Dr. Montelongo has joined UT Southwestern Medical Center as an Assistant Director of Clinical Microbiology at Parkland, where they are dedicated to improving diagnostic tools and enhancing patient care. His primary focus is on advancing diagnostics of fungal pathogens.
