Toine Mercier MD PhD graduated as a physician from the faculty of medicine at Leuven University, Belgium, in 2014. He is currently a resident in internal medicine, with a subsequent specialization in hematology. In 2020, he successfully defended his PhD thesis on rapid diagnostic tools for invasive fungal infections in hematology patients. Currently, he combines his residency with post-doctoral research on opportunistic respiratory infections at the University Hospitals Leuven. His main interests are invasive fungal infections, diagnostic tools, bioinformatics and data science. He is the secretary of the Belgian Society of Human and Animal Mycology and is a member of the ECMM working group on Immunologic Markers for Diagnosis and Treatment Monitoring in Invasive Mold Infection.
